La Ronde De Fun

Solo project by Kjell Tore "Kito" Sandersen from Porsgrunn. Released one cassette EP in 1985.

Originally a fan of progressive rock heroes like early Genesis, King Crimson and Mike Oldfield, Kito was a reknowned session drummer in his hometown and played in several local bands in the mid-to-late '70s. By 1980, he had started listening to electronic music - including Suicide and The Human League - and began setting up a studio at home with a lot of synthesizers and electronic equipment. He bought his first synth, the Arp Pro-Soloist, because he loved the sound of it - as made famous by Genesis' Tony Banks.

Kito started writing songs in 1979, and in between his continued work as a drummer for more or less anyone who'd hire him, he'd record his own demos. The first song he finished was called "Dildo Drumbop". This track was released on the "Flash" compilation cassette in 1982. Work continued on his solo material, and the following year, Kito actually got a contract with the Strawberry Records label. Unfortunately, the label went bankrupt before the signatures dried on the contract, and so Kito continued his demo work in between other projects. He would record the songs at home or at Busk Lydstudio, which was run by a friend, and soon had enough for a cassette EP release.

Although Kito played drums, percussion and synthesizers on all songs, the material was highly varied - fitting to a man whose inspirations lay in all sorts of genres and directions. (Kito also got help on guitars, bass, backing vocals and clavinet by some of his friends.) The music was always Kito's main interest; his lyrics were mostly written subconciously - chosing words for their sound more than for their meaning. More often than not, the lyrics do not tell a story, or indeed, make much sense if taken literally.

A friend who collected 50's memorabilia had given Kito a book of pinup art, in which he found a poster called "La Ronde De Fun"... This now became the bandname for Kito's project. The cassette was self-released and only sold in the Porsgrunn/Skien area, but word got around and an edition of 250 copies sold out in a few weeks. As this was the number Kito had hoped to sell, he considered himself "finished" with the project, and it would be another 13 years before he made it available again, this time as a limited edition of 100 cd-r's and with a bonus track "Whipe It Clean - Tear It Off". Kjell Tore Sandersen is still active as a drummer in local bands in Porsgrunn, playing the local pubs and clubs as ever.
