New wave band from Hamar, formed in late 1980. Askild Hagen (bs/synth/voc), Petter Nordgård (dr), Sissel Ambjør (cl/synth), Stein Viem (synth) and Håkon Johnson (gt) met when they attended the same secondary shool at age 16.
Lage Børresen played drums in the beginning. Børresens father was a teacher at the band’s old primary school, and this connection gave them access to the shool’s music room for rehearsals. Their first demo tracks were largely flippant attempts at writing songs and playing together – a bunch of kids having fun – with the instruments available in school: Recorder flute, violin, clarinet, accoustic guitar, xylophone et al. Soon however, both skill and ambition grew, until they settled on a highly contemporary “new rock” sound (a term used to describe the Joy Division/ Cure-inspired, melancholy new wave bands that amassed in the early eighties) and more conventional rock instrumentation (although still featuring the clarinet prominently). They held their first concert in 1981, at the same school where they had been rehearsing.
The band had a high profile locally, playing a lot of gigs, and soon built a steady cult following. They impressed local press by securing a high profile warm-up gig in Oslo, supporting Modul 3/ Montasje (a famous post-punk project from the members of seminal punk group Kjøtt) on 16. September 1982.
Their only release was the cassette “Skjuler Seg Bak?”, released in February 1983 as a numbered edition of 500, with A5-sized booklet, and with a “consume-by” date of 13.04.84 (although some tracks have kept very well and are still fit for consumption!). The cassette has a fair share of interesting songs, ranging from dark wave to post punk, and includes a few synth-driven songs, like the title track, “Svar I Dagen”, “Fred og Kirke” and “Den Korsfestede Sier”. Lyrics were mainly written by Hagen, but Nedbør also put the work of famous contemporary poets to use.
The members of Nedbør decided to call it quits as they finished secondary school. The members were moving to various parts of the country, some for military service, others for work. It would be difficult to assemble the whole group for rehearsals and concerts, so they disbanded after their farewell gig at an outdoor fest on 11. june 1983. They reformed for one gig that December, when the Hamar division of the state TV company (NRK Hedmark) contacted them about a feature on the underground rock scene (“Music around the country”).
After Nedbør, Johnson, Hagen and Viem formed El. Hagen also made a lot of music as a solo artist. In 1988, Sissel Ambjør photographed him for the cover of his LP as Adrian Cox.
